The Hand Bookbinders of California 44th Annual Members Exhibition

The Hand Bookbinders of California 44th Annual Members Exhibition
at the San Francisco Public Library

June 18 through August 21, 2016
Skylight Gallery, Sixth Floor
Main Library, Civic Center

The Hand Bookbinders of California celebrate their 44th Annual Members’ Exhibition at the San Francisco Public Library with an opening reception on Saturday, June 18th, at 2pm, in the Skylight Gallery, Sixth Floor, Main Library. The exhibition continues through August 21st.

This year’s non-juried exhibition includes the work of over forty of its members and presents a broad spectrum of both traditional and innovative approaches to the concept, structure, and construction of the book.  The objects displayed range in scale from the minuscule to the mammoth, and in structure from gold-tooled leather bindings and boxes.  There will be two docent-led tours of the exhibition at 10 a.m. on Thursdays, June 23rdand July 7th.

The Hand Bookbinders of California (HBC) was founded in 1972 by a group of Bay Area bookbinders and collectors to provide a forum in which to share and promote their interest in books and bookbinding.  Over the last 44 years, the group has continued to create a venue for the exchange of ideas and techniques, to foster public appreciation of the art of design binding, to exhibit the work of its members, and to encourage students in order to perpetuate a Bay Area tradition of fine binding dating back to the nineteenth century.  Since its foundation, the membership of the HBC has grown to nearly 200 book lovers and artists from all over the country and the group’s scope has expanded to include professionals, amateurs, and students of conservation, box making, fine printing, artist’s books, papermaking and decoration, calligraphy, printmaking, and writing.  Membership in the Hand Bookbinders of California is open to anyone.

The Hand Bookbinders of California meets monthly. The group sponsors bookbinding workshops and classes, and publishes The Gold Leaf, a biannual newsletter.
